In bris few pages, Vian has turned his starry-eyed teenagers into tragical heroes. Set in a charmingly surreal Paris, wealthy ods Colin spends his time developing his pianocktail a cocktail-making piano and devouring otherworldly dishes prepared by his trusty chef Nicolas. It is incredibly hard to pull this sort of thing off without seeming twee or annoying, and Vian just doesn’t seem twee or annoying. Refresh and try again. There are three English translation of this book from what i can tell.

Is Vian more or less unconsciously describing drug addiction? Even the title is a bit better in French: It’s hard to believe that the different ingredients go together! Or you can picture the famous scene from Charlie Chaplin’s “Hard Times”: Besides that point, both translations of the Vian novel reads very well. Apart from all that, this is a novel that’s full of witty allegories about pretty much everything and which I’m sure that I didn’t quite get even half of. Not quite beneath, actually, for subtexts keep erupting to the surface.
I’m thinking of Murnau or Lang. It felt like I was doing this rescuing translation in my mental visual.
